Happy Fall!

We realize that it has been far too long since we have shared some of our favorite cakes here. In return for our neglect, we offer you two fabulous ladies--one naughty and one bewitching, but both so sweet.

Our first lady Karen made in August for an incredible charity event. It was Kate's Club 8th Annual Cabaret, with the theme this year being 'Moulin Rouge'. So clearly, we had no choice but to make a can-can dancer. Joshua provided the incredible dessert display behind her--croquembouche, corset cookies, cake pops, cupcakes, and truffles. It was a decadent night for sure.

Our second lady made her spellbinding debut in Oklahoma at this year's Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show. Karen and Joshua were invited to teach a sculpture class. Not only did they create this amazing cake, they taught 45 people how to create their own, but on a slightly smaller scale.

We have more amazing events coming up, so be on the lookout for more HB fun!

Happy August!

This summer has been keeping us busy (which we love)! Karen and Joshua had the opportunity to attend The ICES Sugar Show in Charlotte at the beginning of the month and are getting ready to attend the Oklahoma Sugar Art Show in October, where Karen will be teaching. In between traveling a planning, we have managed to put together a few cakes. :)

The birthday girl requested calla lilies, and Joshua delivered! His sugar flowers always look perfect (and too real to eat!).
I think we have the art of 'sweet' nailed down. Karen made the cake based off of the baby's bedding.
Modeling chocolate T. Rex sculpted by Heidi. He was a topper for a cake we made for a little girl who loves dinosaurs!

Saving the best for last...Rockstars love baseball, too! Heidi was lucky enough to make a Seattle Mariners birthday cake for Ben Gibbard, the lead singer of Death Cab for Cutie. We hope the band considered it a home run!

Look What We've Been Up To!

Yummy summery cookies painted by Karen. Even the sun is tired of this heat.

Summer birthdays call for bright cheery cakes! Courtesy of Joshua.

It's seemed like baby shower season around here. Karen made this really cute rocking horse for a soon-to-be mother of twins!

Believe it or not, this rat is for a little girl's first birthday! She fell in love with a black stuffed toy rat and we replicated it for her cake. Rat sculpted by Karen.

What We've Been Up To!

Here's another little peak at what has occupied our time this week. The summer season has made its way into our cake designs as of late. Lots of bright colors and watery wonders.

Pink and sherbert painted paisley, made by Karen. The perfect addition to any small gathering.
Painted plaid cake also by Karen. A great guys' cake!
Hand-sculpted chocolate Eiffel Tower cake topper made by Karen. A fun, girly twist on an iconic landmark.

Hand-sculpted chocolate sea turtles made by Heidi. The sanding sugar 'sand' at the bottom makes it perfect!

Baby Shower Butterfly cookies made by Joshua. Each one is so different, which makes it too difficult to choose a favorite!

Our Week In Cake

Our order this past week were slightly less traditional and that's always fun for us! Here's a little peek into what kept us busy...

A rehearsal dinner groom's cake/birthday cake made by Karen. The cutie critters aren't the couple, but the couple's beloved pets.

A fun and unique twist on a graduation cake made by Joshua. The background color of the cake is a nod to her now alma mater, Spelman.

A Cajun themed first birthday made by Karen and Joshua. The cake was accompanied with the crawfish cupcakes pictured below. Laisser les bon temps rouler, y'all!

What We've Been Up To!

Spring has sprung and our week has reflected that quite well! It's been a week of bright, cheerful cakes and we are loving it!

Pickle turned 1 this week! We do not know Pickle personally, but we (Joshua in particular) really enjoyed making her birthday cake. Pickle has to be one of the cutest baby nicknames to date!

Cookies were a huge hit this week! Heidi hand painted the Tulips and Bumble Bees. If you have not yet tried our brown sugar cookies, you have no clue what you're missing! They are incredible.

Easter Egg cookies, made by Karen and Heidi. What a pretty edition to an Easter basket... or Easter brunch hostess gift!

Happy Easter from all of us at Highland Bakery!

Look What We've Been Up To!

We want to start doing a weekly post to show you what cool cakes we've made recently. We'll tell you a little bit about the cake and let you know who made it. Enjoy!

Wedding dress cookies, made by Joshua. These were sent to local wedding dress boutiques by a local magazine. Each cookie was a little different and they were all worthy of a walk down the aisle.
Staley the Bear groom's cake, made by Heidi! The bride surprised her new husband with the cake at their reception.
Fairy and Mushroom cake for a little girl's 4th birthday, made by Karen. We love how it sparkles!
Bollywood Corset, made by Karen. This was for a 30th birthday party. The birthday girl had recently traveled to India and fell in love with the beautiful fabrics and clothes!

Chinese Dragon head, made by Karen out of fondant and modeling chocolate. The bride used to work at Highland Bakery and instead of a traditional tiered cake, she made little individual cakes that snaked back behind the dragon to mimic the shape of its body.
